Petrus de Vries was appointed as the Sue Struengmann Professor of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Cape Town. He was born and brought up in South Africa, and read medicine at Stellenbosch University. He moved to the UK in 1993 where he trained in Psychiatry and did a Ph.D. in Developmental Neuropsychiatry at the University of Cambridge. He sub-specialised in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Prof de Vries has a wide network of international research collaborations, including in the USA, UK and Europe. He has research interest in autism and neurodevelopmental disorders, and has led various studies on the Neuropsychiatry of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, a multi-system genetic disorder associated with autism and neurodevelopmental disorders. He is a medical and scientific advisor to academic and user/carer organizations in the USA, UK and Europe, and is chairman of the Society for the Study of Behavioural Phenotypes, an international, interdisciplinary research societ
